Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander will be starring in the upcoming reboot of the Tomb Raider film franchise, with The Wave director Roar Uthaug set to direct. MGM, who now owns the rights to the franchise, will be co-producing with Warner Bros.
The two previous Tomb Raider movies, 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and 2003’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, starred Angelina Jolie. The success of those films, in addition to a still thriving game franchise, makes a new series of Tomb Raider films a safe bet.
In addition to her Oscar win for The Danish Girl, Vikander also starred in Ex Machina, Burnt and The Man From U.N.C.L.E last year. She will be seen later this year in the drama The Light Between Oceans and opposite Matt Damon in Jason Bourne.
