Deadline is reporting that a King Kong vs Godzilla film is in the works. The upcoming King Kong: Skull Island has moved studios from Universal to Warner Bro., who currently own the US rights to the Godzilla franchise. Skull Island, which will be starringTom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Corey Hawkins and Jason Mitchell, is scheduled for release on March 10, 2017, with a sequel to Godzilla still scheduled as well, so this would be released some time after those two films are released.
While the idea of a King Kong vs Godzilla film is pretty great, there are no guarantees it will be any good. 2005’s King Kong was pretty decent, and about twenty minutes of last years’ Godzilla was great (the rest, not so much), but franchise team-ups don’t historically go well (we’re talking to you Freddy vs Jason and Alien vs Predator), so we’ll have to wait and see.
